Spring Cleaning Your Beauty Routine

When the weather starts to warm, it’s the perfect time to freshen up everything from your wardrobe to your daily skincare routine.

Here at the Jessica Simpson offices, some of us have become a little obsessed with Marie Kondo, that tiny wonder of tidying and organization (we’re not ashamed to say we binge-watched the first season of her Netflix show in single a weekend). We’ve definitely taken her “spark joy” credo to heart and looked closely at the clutter in our lives in everything from our desks to our makeup bags. Now that spring is here, we’re feeling inspired by the “out with the old, in with the new” when it comes to the products we use, so we’ve put together some tips for how you can spring clean your beauty, too.

Take stock

This rule of thumb applies to anything inside your beauty bag, underneath your bathroom sink, or inside your medicine cabinet: If a product is more than a year past its expiration date, don’t think—just toss it. Similarly, if you’ve got a drawer filled with half-used lotions, potions, or creams that you’ve not picked up in the past two to three months, it’s time to throw them away, too.

 Makeup or bust

Some serious honesty with yourself is required for this part of the self-editing session, but this time of year is perfect for taking a good look at the makeup you have, what you use, and what you don’t. If that fancy eye palette or hot-pink lipstick you bought has been languishing underneath your sink for the past couple of months because it just doesn’t work as well as you’d hoped, you need to move on (and by “move on,” we mean chuck it into the trash bin).

Switch it up

With the warmer weather, products that add extra hydration like serums and heavy creams, scrubs that aggressively slough off dead skin, and astringent toners can be taken out of your routine entirely. Instead, focus your daily skincare regimen on products that are season-appropriate, like gel-based moisturizers and facial cleansers, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and toners that soothe and calm.

A fresh start

This is the fun part: Adding weather-appropriate products to your now culled-down collection. In the spirt of the spring season, we’ve decided to also look at incorporating “clean” beauty products into the mix. Some of our favorite products include Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream with SPF 30; Suntegrity 5-in-1 Tinted Moisturizing Face Sunscreen; Ilia Tinted Lip Conditioner (SPF 15); Juice Beauty Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser; and Herbivore Botanicals Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner.
